I had myself a fun little day at Talize last week. I wasn't there for the dolls, I really wasn't...but they just seemed to call my name. They had a nice selection of Barbies, as well as quite a few other dolls that i don't give a crap about. They even had a few older dolls, and I was mighty tempted, but I only bought two.
Teen Fun Skipper-Work Out Teen
I have a confession about this doll, well 2 actually, and here they are:
-I already have her somewhere in my many bins of Barbies
-She's not a very attractive doll. Sorry.
I love Skipper. When I was younger and all the girls wanted to play Barbies, I was always the one who grabbed Skipper out of the pile. She was the one my hard earned allowances were spent on. Now, this was in the late 1980's/90's, and that's the Skipper I'm talking about. Cute little body, slightly too large head with big cartoony eyes. This doll fits the bill, but her strange hair and oddly colored eyes throw me right off.
She was purchased from a thrift store, so I can only expect so much, but she actually has her original pants, shirt and leg warmers. Her hair is in good condition too, though I had to change it from the original style to a poofy bun. It just looks better. Here's a comparison.
That's some stylin' hair there girl!
Mt thrift store doll doesn't have the complete outfit, but she certainly has more of it than my other copy of this doll does.
But what's up with eyes? Turquoise and lime green? I'm not a huge fan of the hair either, it has a strange coppery tone and the curls are awkward. However, she has that cute Skipper face that I love so much.
There are three in the Teen Fun Skipper set, this one and Party Teen both have the stupidest make-up and clothes, but I love Cheerleader Teen Skipper. The three were originally released in 1987.
Swappin' Styles In the Spotlight/Hollywood Diva Sassy
I picked up this doll solely because she was pretty, all squashed up in her little plastic bag. I had to idea who she was, but she was clearly a more recent doll.
Research has turned up that this little beauty is Swappin' Styles in the Spotlight Sassy (at least in North America, in Europe she's Hollywood Divas Sassy). This line was released in 2011 and includes six dolls: Glam, Artsy, Sporty, Cutie, Sweetie and Sassy. As far as I can tell they have no actual names, like Beth and Meredith. Also, they're part of the Fashionista line, apparently.
She comes wearing this fancy dress, all red and pink spandex, sparkles everywhere, asymmetrical tulle skirt, fancy peep-toe black boots, and some weird badge of honor on her shoulder. She must be a hero of the 2010's Barbie VS BRATZ wars. My original interpretation of her outfit was that she was some sort of dancer, like something Spanish and sexy. I guess it's sassy...I guess.
My doll is missing her earrings, purse and some stupid looking bracelet with a star poking out from it.
But seriously, how pretty is she? I think she's the best of the 6.
This doll uses the Summer face mold, which is not normally a favorite of mine but it looks great on her. She has brown/mahogany hair, and green eyes. I love the bright red lip stick and she has gorgeously done make-up on her eyes. The sparkle is a nice touch, and it is subtle enough to not be tacky.
She has the same body mold as the previous Swappin' Styles Fashionistas, and may I politely ask why all the Barbie line doesn't have this body? Seriously, it's fan-freakin-tastic. I don't think it is quite as poseable as the Made to Move line, but I haven't actually opened any of the MTM dolls yet, so I can't say that 100%.
I spent an unholy amount of time posing this doll.
This doll is sold with her hair down, but fancy. My doll has been messed with, and I like her hair up better, it gives me the Spanish dancing vibe I like.
Another shot with her hair down.
Now, I'm going to come right out and say it, I plain do not get this whole "swappin styles" thing. Aren't all dolls capable of swapping styles by just taking the clothes off and putting them on the next doll?Wasn't that a big part of the fun playing with them? Do we really need to be able to take off their heads and part of their chest?Very, very odd concept, if you ask me. Also, how lazy are kids nowadays that they can't dress their dolls?
